Peroxyalkyl radical
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007872
A highly reactive chemical intermediate, with the general formula ROO•, formed in the atmosphere during the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These radicals are created when an alkyl radical (R•) reacts with molecular oxygen (O₂). Peroxyalkyl radicals react with nitric oxide (NO) to form nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and an alkoxy radical, a key step in the photochemical production of tropospheric ozone.
