Criegee intermediate

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010452

A highly reactive, short-lived molecule with a zwitterionic structure, formally known as a carbonyl oxide. It is formed in the gas phase during the ozonolysis of alkenes and contributes to atmospheric oxidation processes by reacting with water vapor, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. The reactions of these intermediates are a source of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals and can lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosols.
