Criteria pollutants

A group of common air pollutants regulated by national ambient air quality standards due to their known harmful effects on human health and the environment. These pollutants include particulate matter, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and lead. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sets primary and secondary standards for these substances.
