Alkenes
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003436
A class of unsaturated hydrocarbons containing at least one carbon-carbon double bond, with the general formula CnH2n. In the atmosphere, alkenes are primarily emitted from biogenic sources, such as plants, and from anthropogenic activities, including vehicle exhaust and industrial processes. They are highly reactive with atmospheric oxidants like ozone and hydroxyl radicals, contributing to the formation of secondary organic aerosols and photochemical smog.
