Aldehydes

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003427

A class of organic compounds containing a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to at least one hydrogen atom. In the atmosphere, they are formed through the oxidation of hydrocarbons from both natural sources, like vegetation, and anthropogenic sources, such as vehicle exhaust and industrial processes. Aldehydes are highly reactive and contribute to the formation of photochemical smog and secondary organic aerosols, with formaldehyde being the most abundant in the troposphere.
