Formaldehyde
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005725
A colorless, pungent gas and volatile organic compound (HCHO) that is an intermediate product in the atmospheric oxidation of methane and other hydrocarbons. It originates from both natural sources, like vegetation and wildfires, and anthropogenic activities, including fossil fuel combustion and industrial processes. Due to its high reactivity and short atmospheric lifetime of a few hours, its concentration is an indicator of active photochemical processes and a source of hydroperoxyl radicals.
