Nonmethane hydrocarbons

A class of volatile organic compounds that are hydrocarbons, excluding methane. These compounds, abbreviated as NMHCs, are precursors to the formation of tropospheric ozone and other secondary pollutants in the presence of nitrogen oxides and sunlight. Major anthropogenic sources include vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and solvent use, while natural sources include vegetation.
