Surface ozone
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009441
Ozone (O3) found in the troposphere, near the Earth's surface, which is primarily formed through photochemical reactions involving nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight. Unlike stratospheric ozone, which protects from UV radiation, surface ozone is a harmful air pollutant that can damage respiratory systems and vegetation. Its concentrations are often highest in urban and industrial areas.
