Nonlocal static stability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007585

An assessment of atmospheric stability that considers a finite vertical displacement of an air parcel, rather than an infinitesimal one. This approach accounts for situations where a parcel must be lifted through a stable layer before it can reach a level of free convection and continue rising on its own. Nonlocal stability analysis contrasts with local stability, which only examines the conditions in the parcel's immediate vicinity.
