Static stability

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009218

The tendency of an air parcel to return to its original vertical position after being displaced. The atmosphere is statically stable if a displaced parcel experiences a restoring force, unstable if it experiences an accelerating force, and neutral if it remains at its new position. It is determined by comparing the parcel's temperature change to the environmental temperature change with height.
