Static stability

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011334

A measure of the atmosphere's resistance to vertical motion, determined by the temperature lapse rate relative to the adiabatic lapse rate. An atmosphere is statically stable if a parcel of air, when displaced vertically, tends to return to its original position. This condition inhibits vertical mixing and can lead to the accumulation of pollutants near the surface.
