Adiabatic lapse rate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000252
The rate at which the temperature of an air parcel changes as it rises or falls in the atmosphere without exchanging heat with its surroundings. For dry air, the dry adiabatic lapse rate is approximately 9.8 °C per kilometer. For saturated air, the moist adiabatic lapse rate is lower due to the release of latent heat during condensation, typically ranging from 4 to 9 °C per kilometer.
