Potential temperature
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009318
The temperature a parcel of air would attain if it were brought adiabatically, meaning without heat exchange with its surroundings, to a standard reference pressure. This conserved quantity allows for direct comparison of the thermal state of air masses at different altitudes or pressures. The standard reference pressure is almost always 1000 millibars (100 kPa).
