Lapse rate

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006442

The rate at which an atmospheric variable, most commonly temperature, decreases with an increase in altitude. It is expressed as the change in temperature per unit change in height, such as degrees Celsius per kilometer. The dry adiabatic lapse rate for Earth's atmosphere is a constant value of approximately 9.8 °C/km, representing the cooling of a rising parcel of dry air due to expansion.
