Laporte rule
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006441
A selection rule in spectroscopy that states that electronic transitions between states of the same parity are forbidden. This means that transitions between two g (gerade) states or two u (ungerade) states are forbidden, while g to u or u to g transitions are allowed. It applies to centrosymmetric molecules and atoms.
