Spin-flip transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011212
A transition between electronic states of a molecule or ion that involves a change in the total electron spin quantum number. Such transitions are formally forbidden by spectroscopic selection rules, resulting in very low absorption or emission intensities compared to spin-allowed transitions. An example is the transition from a singlet ground state to a triplet excited state, which is observed in phosphorescence.
