Electromagnetic transition
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003697
A transition between two energy states of an atom, molecule or ion that is accompanied by the absorption or emission of a photon. The photon frequency follows from the energy difference between the two states through the relation h times frequency equals E2 minus E1, where h is the Planck constant. Electronic, vibrational, rotational and spin transitions are all examples, and each obeys electromagnetic selection rules.
