Electronic transition

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003758

The movement of an electron from one electronic state to another within an atom or molecule, typically involving the absorption or emission of a photon. This change occurs when an electron jumps to a higher-energy orbital upon absorbing energy or falls to a lower-energy orbital while releasing energy. These transitions are responsible for the characteristic absorption and emission spectra of chemical species.
