Electronically excited state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003759
An electronic state of an atom or molecule that possesses higher energy than its ground state. This occurs when an electron transitions from a lower energy orbital to a higher energy orbital, typically through the absorption of a photon or by thermal excitation. The lifetime of an excited state can range from femtoseconds to several seconds.
