Electron-pair acceptor

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003760

A molecule or ion capable of accepting a pair of electrons from another chemical species, an electron-pair donor, to form a dative covalent bond. This behavior is the defining characteristic of a Lewis acid. Common examples include protons (H⁺), metal cations such as Cu²⁺, and neutral molecules with an incomplete valence shell like boron trifluoride (BF₃), which accepts an electron pair from ammonia (NH₃).
