Lewis base
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006548
A molecular entity, or a corresponding chemical species, that is an electron-pair donor and can form a covalent bond by donating an electron pair to a Lewis acid. This interaction creates a Lewis adduct. Unlike a Brønsted-Lowry base, which is a proton acceptor, a Lewis base is defined by its ability to provide electrons, a property of species with lone pairs such as ammonia (NH₃) or water (H₂O).
