Lewis acid
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006545
A molecular entity, or a corresponding chemical species, that possesses an accessible, empty atomic or molecular orbital capable of accommodating an electron pair. This species interacts with a Lewis base, which donates the electron pair, to form a coordinate covalent bond in a product called a Lewis adduct. Common examples include metal cations like Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺, as well as molecules with an incomplete octet such as boron trifluoride (BF₃), which contrasts with Brønsted-Lowry acids that are defined as proton donors.
