Rydberg state
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010464
An electronically excited state of an atom or molecule in which an electron is promoted to an orbital with a very large principal quantum number. These orbitals resemble those of a hydrogen atom, with the excited electron far from the core. Rydberg states exhibit properties similar to those of highly excited hydrogen atoms, including large orbital radii and small ionization energies.
