Orbital

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008296

A mathematical function that describes the wave-like behavior of an electron in an atom or molecule, defining a region of space where an electron is most likely to be found. Each orbital is characterized by a unique set of quantum numbers. Atomic orbitals describe electrons in isolated atoms, while molecular orbitals describe electrons in molecules.
