Orbit
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008295
The bony socket in a vertebrate skull, formed in humans by seven bones, that houses the eyeball together with its muscles, nerves and blood vessels. In developmental toxicity studies the size, shape and formation of the orbit are examined for malformations that a teratogen may have caused. Abnormal orbital development accompanies eye defects such as anophthalmia, the absence of the eye, and microphthalmia, an abnormally small eye.
