Orbit
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007723
The curved path, usually elliptical, that a satellite or other celestial body follows around a larger body due to gravitational attraction. In meteorology, satellites are placed into specific orbits, such as geostationary or polar, to provide continuous or global coverage of atmospheric conditions. The characteristics of an orbit, like altitude and inclination, determine the satellite's observational capabilities.
