Geostationary Meteorological Satellite
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005937
A type of weather satellite that orbits the Earth at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles) directly above the equator, moving at the same speed as the Earth's rotation. This allows it to remain fixed over a single point on the Earth's surface, providing continuous, real-time imagery and data for weather monitoring and forecasting over a large region. Japan operates a series of these satellites, known as GMS.
