Synchronous Meteorological Satellite

A geostationary satellite designed to provide continuous, real-time imagery of Earth's weather patterns from a fixed position above the equator. These satellites orbit at an altitude where their orbital period matches Earth's rotation, allowing them to observe the same geographic area constantly. The first Synchronous Meteorological Satellite, SMS-1, was launched in 1974.
