Stationary orbit
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009226
An orbit in which a satellite remains in a fixed position relative to the surface of the celestial body it is orbiting. For an Earth-orbiting satellite, this is called a geostationary orbit and requires it to be placed at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers directly above the equator. The satellite must travel in the same direction as the Earth's rotation with an orbital period of one sidereal day.
