Geosynchronous satellite
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005958
An artificial satellite that orbits the Earth at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles) directly above the equator, with an orbital period matching the Earth's rotation. This allows the satellite to appear stationary relative to a fixed point on the Earth's surface, providing continuous observation of a specific region. Geostationary satellites are a specific type of geosynchronous satellite that orbit directly over the equator.
