Geostationary Lightning Mapper
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005936
A satellite instrument that detects and maps total lightning (in-cloud, cloud-to-cloud, and cloud-to-ground) continuously over a large geographic area from geostationary orbit. It provides real-time data on lightning activity, which is vital for severe weather forecasting and aviation safety. This instrument is a key component of modern geostationary operational environmental satellites, such as the GOES-R series.
