An exceptionally long-duration or spatially extensive lightning discharge that can stretch for hundreds of kilometers or last for many seconds. These rare events are typically observed in large mesoscale convective systems and are detected by satellite-based lightning mapping arrays. One recorded megaflash covered a horizontal distance of over 700 kilometers.
