Polar-orbiting satellite

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002068

  1. An Earth-observing satellite that follows a high-inclination orbit, passing near or over the North and South Poles on each revolution. As the Earth rotates beneath it, the satellite's instruments scan the entire globe in successive north-south strips over the course of one or two days. These satellites typically orbit at altitudes between 700 and 900 kilometers.

  2. A weather satellite which travels over both poles each time it orbits the Earth. It orbits about 530 miles (850 km) above the Earth's surface. A satellite with an orbit nearly parallel to the earth's meridian lines which crosses the polar regions on each orbit.
