Polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite

A type of artificial satellite that orbits the Earth in a path that passes close to the North and South Poles, providing global coverage for environmental monitoring. These satellites collect data on atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles, sea surface temperature, and ice cover. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates a series of these satellites.
