A low-lying tract of land enclosed by dikes that forms an artificial hydrological entity. It has no connection with outside water other than through manually operated devices, with the water level inside controlled by pumping or drainage canals. This technique is famously used in the Netherlands to create usable land from coastal zones, marshes, or lake beds.
