Land breeze

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001507

  1. A local wind system that blows from land toward a body of water, such as a sea or large lake, during the nighttime hours. It forms as the land cools more rapidly than the water after sunset, creating a higher pressure area over the land relative to the warmer, lower pressure area over the water. This pressure gradient drives the air movement, with speeds generally ranging from a few to about 10 knots.

  2. A coastal breeze at night blowing from land to sea, caused by the difference in the rates of cooling of their respective surfaces.
