Spin-orbit coupling
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011219
The interaction between the intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of an electron and its orbital angular momentum. This interaction leads to a splitting of energy levels and can facilitate intersystem crossing, a process where a molecule transitions between states of different spin multiplicity. Its magnitude increases significantly with the atomic number of the elements involved.
