An abbreviation for intersystem crossing, a non-radiative transition between electronic states of different spin multiplicity. This process involves a change in the total spin angular momentum of the molecule, for example, from a singlet state to a triplet state. Intersystem crossing is a key step in phosphorescence and some photochemical reactions.
