Deactivation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002878

The dissipation of excess energy by an excited molecule through any route: emission of light, radiationless transitions such as internal conversion and intersystem crossing, or transfer of energy to another species. Radiative deactivation appears as fluorescence or phosphorescence, and the rate constants of all pathways add to give the decay rate of the excited state. Intersystem crossing removes the singlet but leaves the molecule in an excited triplet state.
