Spin-orbit splitting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011221
The energy difference between electronic states that arise from the interaction of an electron's spin angular momentum with its orbital angular momentum. This splitting removes the degeneracy of certain energy levels. The magnitude of spin-orbit splitting increases with the atomic number of the atoms in a molecule.
