Ligand field splitting
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006570
The energy difference between d-orbitals of a transition metal ion in a coordination complex, caused by the electrostatic interaction with surrounding ligands. This splitting removes the degeneracy of the d-orbitals, leading to distinct energy levels. The magnitude of this splitting influences the complex's color and magnetic properties.
