Zeeman effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012793

The splitting of spectral lines of an atom or molecule into multiple components when the source of the light is placed in a static external magnetic field. This phenomenon arises from the interaction between the magnetic moment of the atom and the applied magnetic field. The magnitude of the splitting is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field.
