  "definition": "A spectroscopic effect where a substance placed in a strong magnetic field parallel to a light beam absorbs left and right circularly polarized light to different extents. This difference in absorption is plotted as a function of wavelength to produce an MCD spectrum, which provides information about the electronic states of a molecule. The technique is particularly sensitive to paramagnetic species and transitions involving degenerate electronic states, which are split by the magnetic field via the Zeeman effect.",
