Dichroism
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003151
The property of a substance where it exhibits differential absorption of light depending on the polarization of the incident beam. Anisotropic materials, such as certain crystals or oriented polymer films, absorb one of two plane-polarized components more strongly than the other. This phenomenon is quantified by the difference in the absorption coefficients for light polarized parallel and perpendicular to an orientation axis in the sample.
