Magnetic deflection
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006900
The change in trajectory of charged particles as they pass through a magnetic field. This phenomenon is caused by the Lorentz force acting perpendicular to both the particle's velocity and the magnetic field direction. It is a fundamental principle used in mass spectrometry to separate ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio.
