Field-free region
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004414
A section within a mass spectrometer where ions travel without being subjected to external electric or magnetic fields. In this region, ions maintain a constant velocity and direction, allowing for their separation based on mass-to-charge ratio. This area is present in time-of-flight mass spectrometers, for example, where ions drift before detection.
