Crossed electric and magnetic fields

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002714

A configuration where an electric field and a magnetic field are oriented perpendicularly to each other. This arrangement is employed in mass spectrometry to separate charged particles based on their velocity, as the forces exerted by the two fields can be balanced for particles moving at a specific speed. Such fields are used in Wien filters and other velocity selectors.
