Wien filter

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012698

A device that selects charged particles based on their velocity by applying perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. Only particles with a specific velocity, where the electric and magnetic forces cancel each other, pass through undeflected. This filter is commonly used in mass spectrometry as a velocity selector for ion beams.
