Cyclotron motion
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002832
The circular or helical motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, where the magnetic force provides the centripetal force. The frequency of this motion, known as the cyclotron frequency, is inversely proportional to the particle's mass-to-charge ratio. This principle is exploited in mass spectrometry, particularly in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometers.
