Fourier-transform mass spectrometry

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004619

A form of mass analysis that turns ion motion into frequencies, from which m/z values follow, by recording the image current of the ions as a time-domain transient and applying a Fourier transform to it. Ions orbit in a magnetic field in Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance instruments and oscillate in an electrostatic field in Kingdon traps such as the Orbitrap. Both types routinely reach a resolving power above 100000.
